Behavioural science is a combination of behavioural economics, cognitive neuroscience and psychology. It is not about academic papers. It is about real experiments done on real people in different contexts, our case being employees and the work environment. There is a big gap between what behavioural science finds through experiments about human and organizational behaviour - and how organisations versus how businesses actually function. That's the reason why engagement levels amongst employees in most organisations is abysmally low. For example, when performance appraisal is done usually annually in most companies, employees are also given feedback on improvement and learning. But behavioural science shows that the focus of employees at that stage is on earning, while learning shuts down. Companies can benefit to a great extent if the scope of improvement conversation is done as a separate exercise at a separate time than the performance appraisal. My presentation will cover what behavioural science findings on rewards, recognition, incentives - monetary, non-monetary, experiential; performance appraisal, feedback, teams, collaboration, workplace design, change management, productivity, culture, core values, their implementation and everything to do with keeping employees happy and performing at work. Think of it as a presentation full of simple, practical and sometimes counter-intuitive solutions based on behavioural science (not gut, not intuition) to motivate employees, focussing on small things that make a big difference. As leaders I want CIOs to rethink their strategy on managing people, on what drives motivation at work and on the application of behavioural science in making ensure they get the best out of their people.
