Peter Docker Speaker Profile
Management is about handling complexity; Leadership is about creating simplicity – and it starts with being clear on Why, as an organisation, we do what we do. Until it can be put into words, it’s very difficult to put it into action and nearly impossible to scale.
Peter worked with Simon Sinek for over 7 years and was one of the founding ‘Igniters’ on Simon’s team. He took his years of practical experience to co-author Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team, with Simon and David Mead. Published in September 2017, it has been translated into more than 25 languages and has sold over 420,000 copies. In December 2019, Peter stepped away from Simon’s team to focus on sharing his wider insights into how organisations thrive. His new book, Leading From The Jumpseat: How to Create Extraordinary Opportunities by Handing Over Control, will be published in October 2021. A trained leadership consultant and executive coach, Peter's commercial and industry experience has been at the most senior levels in sectors including oil & gas, construction, mining, pharmaceuticals, banking, television, film, media, print, hospitality, manufacturing and services – across 92 countries. Since 2011, Peter Docker has worked in partnership with Simon Sinek and the Start With Why team to help organizations bring Simon’s ideas to life.
In this talk, Peter draws on material from Simon’s latest book, Leaders Eat Last, and through his own examples of working within extraordinary teams.
Peter explains how leaders can harness the natural drivers that exist in us all to create an environment that attracts the right people, keeps them loyal, and encourages them to work together to create remarkable results.
When leaders set the right conditions for their people – the right context – individuals will be instinctively drawn together to support one another and overcome the constant dangers that threaten our ability to thrive in today’s marketplace.
The approach works seamlessly with the concept of Why – and when used together organizations can become truly extraordinary.
Harness the Power of Why: Building on The Golden Circle
" Building on Simon Sinek’s concept of Why and The Golden Circle, Peter Docker’s Harness the Power of Why talk explains what it means to start with Why and then answers the question of what to do next."
While Management is about handling complexity, Leadership is about creating simplicity. Developed over his diverse career, Peter’s “5 Key Principles for Leadership” and the skills they foster can be applied in any organization, whatever its size or stage of growth.
Highlights from Peter’s talk:
Resilience and Leadership During Crisis
Peter gives a compelling account of what it was like to take 170 men and women to war and back during the 2003 Gulf conflict.
This is a story not about politics, but about people who were called upon to put their lives on the line for each other. Lacking equipment and operating old, unprotected aircraft, they flew every mission they were tasked and everyone returned home safely. This was not by chance – it called upon a particular type of leadership.
Peter draws on his own experience and uses other case studies to explain how to lead effectively through crisis, build teams that are resilient, and create a culture that acts as a catalyst for innovation.
Leading From The Jumpseat: How to Create Extraordinary Opportunities by Handing Over Control
In business and in life, it's inevitable that we hand over the reins to others. We will leave our team, retire as CEO, or see our kids leave home to lead their own lives. In Peter's new book, he shows us how we can embrace this inevitability and in so doing create extraordinary opportunities.
"Leaders know that the secret to success is giving control to the team, safely, consistently, and boldly. In Leading from the Jumpseat, former RAF pilot Peter Docker shows us how to do this."

WORKSHOPS
Workshop 1 – Articulate The Why:
LENGTH: 1/2 OR FULL DAY
For teams or organisations who want to find and clearly articulate their Why – of their division, department or organisation as a whole. The length and details of this workshop can be customized to fit the needs of each client.
ARTICULATE THE WHY
As simple as the Why concept is to understand, one of the biggest challenges a company will face is clearly articulating its purpose, cause or belief. Its Why. While it may be felt, it can be difficult to put into words. Finding the words for our Why is the first step in being able to effectively communicate it. Until it can be put into words, it’s very difficult to put it into action and nearly impossible to scale.
Inspired by Simon Sinek’s Why Discovery Process, this workshop focuses on helping teams or organisations find and clearly articulate their Why in simple language that inspires action. In the workshop, participants will:
• Learn about and access the Limbic system of the brain
• Learn the architecture of a Why statement
• Articulate the first draft of the Why and clearly define the Hows of the organisation, leaving them with their unique Golden Circle.
Workshop 2 – Harness The Power Of Why:
LENGTH: FULL DAY
For organisations that know their Why, this workshop is designed for senior leadership to gain a greater appreciation of the Golden Circle. This workshop is ideally delivered over a full day, enabling participants to work on applying the techniques to the challenges they currently face. A half-day option, while covering the Five Key Principles, does not allow sufficient time for participants to practise using the techniques.
HARNESS THE POWER OF WHY
This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to see a different perspective on the challenges they face, revealing new possibilities. Specifically it will cover these five Principles – Start with Why; Right-to-Left Thinking; Adaptive Leadership; Being and Doing; and Relationship – providing an introduction to the tools and techniques of simple, clear and powerful leadership participants can use immediately.
The session will draw on a number of relevant examples including those from NASA, aviation, finance, pharmaceuticals and mining. Participants will also have the option to take a deeper dive into either the organisation’s Why or Adaptive Leadership techniques, allowing them to work on the current challenges they face.
