Anand Kumar is a renowned mathematician who created waves when his students, most from the underprivileged background, started cracking the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) to secure admission in the prestigious IITs. While most institutes charge lakhs to prepare students for competitive tests, Kumar did it free of cost. The only condition was that the student should be eager to perform. Anand Kumar comes from a modest background and his father was a post office clerk in Bihar. Kumar studied at a Hindi medium government school. As per reports, his love for maths made him submit papers on Numbers Theory that were published in UK’s Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette. Following the death of his father, he would sell papads in evening with his mother Jayanti Devi’s help to support his family but continued work on mathematics during the day. Anand started a small business from home and tutored students in maths to earn extra money. He had a passion for the reading book, but there was a limitation of the foreign book, as a result, he went to Vanarasi in every week by six hours journey by train. In 1992, he rented a room for Rs. 500 a month, and started his own coaching center the Ramanujan School of Mathematics (RSM) where he taught mathematics to the students. His students grew up from two to thirty-six within the span of a year and after three years, there admitted more than 500 students. In 2002, a poor student came to him, who could not attend IIT entrance coaching due to poverty, and Anand was motivated to start the Super 30 program. Being motivated, he launched Super 30 in 2002, for which he is widely recognized. In the Super 30, every year 30 students get chance whom given IIT entrance training free of cost. The institute selects 30 intelligent financially backward students by a competitive exam where lots of students took part in the exam every year. For these thirty students, his mother makes food and Kumar would ready others task relating study. They get the chance to stay in the hostel for a year. From the institute, 391 students get the chance in the IIT entrance exam out of 450 between 2003 and 2016. In 2017, among the 30 students, 30 were selected by the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). For the Super 30 coaching center have government support or other private organization. When his coaching center gradually growing many companies come to belonging sponsor but respectively refused them. Anand wishes more development for the institute and cost behind the center as much he earns by giving tuition in another institute. In March 2009, Discovery Channel broadcast a one-hour-long programme on Super 30, and half a page was devoted to Kumar in The New York Times. Actress and former Miss Japan Norika Fujiwara visited Patna to make a documentary on Kumar's initiatives. Kumar has been featured in programmes by the BBC. Anand has been invited to speak about his experiences at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, different IITs, University of British Columbia, Tokyo University and Stanford University. Anand Kumar is in the Limca Book of Records (2009) for his contribution in helping poor students pass the IIT-JEE by providing them free coaching. Time magazine included Super 30 in the list of Best of Asia 2010. Kumar was awarded the S. Ramanujan Award for 2010 by the Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS) in July 2010. Super 30 received praise from United States President Barack Obama's special envoy Rashad Hussain, who termed it the "best" institute in the country. Newsweek Magazine has taken note of the initiative of mathematician Anand Kumar’s Super 30 and included his school in the list of four most innovative schools in the world.
